Yesterday it was amazing to be able to attend at Emil Berliner Studio in Berlin the half-speed lacquer cut by the 4x Grammy Award–winning sound engineer, Rainer Maillard, to create the SUMMER WATER vinyl master! Also awesome to have Klaus Scheuermann there who did an excellent job mixing and mastering the album. More info about the SUMMER WATER vinyl release this autumn!

SUMMER WATER received 4.5 (out of 5) Stars from Slovakia's online jazz magazine SKJazz.sk!:
"...dynamically and expressively rich...everything is subject to mood and imagery...Now the guitarist has spring reflections left. And I'm really looking forward to them now! And I'm happy to be surprised again..." Visit the FROM SLOVAKIA tab on the REVIEWS page for a link to read the full review! SUMMER WATER received a very nice review from the Free Jazz Blog!:
"...a contemplative reflection of golden hour sunlight glistening...There is a particular sound that DuBois achieves throughout the recording, it is clear, precise and reserved, each note or chord rings richly...the power of the tides and flows are captured...'Sea Before the Storm' expertly encompasses a building tension...Summer Water is surprisingly onomatopoetic, and DuBois' light flooded sound is the perfect soundtrack for a meditative sojourn." Visit the FROM UNITED STATES tab on the REVIEWS page for a link to read the full review! Here are some photos I took last week on the first of a few trips I’ll be taking up to northern Michigan this summer. Some incredible landscapes up north...
SUMMER WATER received a great review in the June 2021 issue of Point of Departure!:
"DuBois captures the dynamic textures and tonal colors of an orchestra, maintaining a bold, forceful sound, not just in terms of volume but intensity...a contemplative aura that permeates the entire session...frenetic fretwork navigating the crashing swells of a rising storm, before subsiding into tranquility in the aftermath...spiritual depth and compositional detail..." Visit the FROM UNITED STATES tab on the REVIEWS page for a link to read the full review! JazzTimes Magazine gave SUMMER WATER a great review!:
"Scott DuBois doesn't just play guitar; he's a sound sculptor...DuBois composed these 11 sinuous and feathery pieces not in summer, but during the dead of winter. Much like a river’s ebb and flow, they surge with forward momentum, swell with flying colors, and lull with introspection. His solitary approach—often quiet, occasionally abrasive, always atmospheric, sometimes symphonic—conjures up soundworlds that wouldn’t be out of place on the ECM label...Summer Water is a solo guitar clinic to behold." The new Scott DuBois / Gebhard Ullmann Duo concert date at the Jazzkaar Festival in Tallinn, Estonia is August 24, 2021. We’ll also be performing other EU concert dates on that tour which will be announced soon!
SUMMER WATER received a great review (in Czech) from the Czech Republic's JazzPort!:
(95/100 Rating) "The guitarist masterfully condenses the flow...he works great with impressions and timbre...you can really see summer light on the billowing sea...constant change in dynamics, colors, mood...breathtaking..." There’s a wonderful Monet exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago right now, called “Monet and Chicago.” The Art Institute has the largest Monet collection in the world, outside of Paris. Check it out if you’re in town.
I wrote four pieces of music inspired by Monet’s “Haystacks” series, one for each season, which I recorded and released on my 2012 LANDSCAPE SCRIPTURE album. You can hear the pieces on the “Scott DuBois: Monet’s Haystacks” playlist in the “Artist Playlists” section of my Spotify Artist Profile: https://open.spotify.com/artist/3OvXIbxyw9xomE5OTt2V0G?si=eVPK4tbvSU2gQdybH-8gyg SUMMER WATER received another great review (in Italian), this one from All About Jazz Italia!:
"...quietly evocative music, with a Nordic taste...in suspense and enchanted...to underline DuBois' ability to construct sonorities with an amplitude that is sometimes almost orchestral with the guitar alone...definitely original." Visit the DA ITALIA tab on the REVIEWS page for a link to read the full review in Italian! New Zealand's Off The Tracks gave SUMMER WATER a great review!:
"Your mind cuts its own nature documentary to frame up alongside this soundtrack that’s already been created...This is a deep, tranquil, meditative album...masterful." Visit the FROM NEW ZEALAND tab on the REVIEWS page for a link to read the full review! SUMMER WATER received a wonderful review in JAZZIZ Magazine!:
"...Summer Water, his latest brilliant and sonically intricate piece of impressionistic musical storytelling...crackling and fiery symphonic energy via an expansive range of string tones, harmonies, rhythmic patterns and unbridled improvisations..." The SCOTT DUBOIS QUARTET LIVE IN MUNICH concert film will be broadcast this Friday, April 30 starting at 17h45 CET on the Stingray DJAZZ TV Channel!:
https://www.programme-tv.net/programme/culture-infos/17390007-scott-dubois-quartet-live-a-munich/ I took this photo up in northern Michigan, where I spent quite a bit of time last year. Lake Michigan has always seemed much more like a sea to me. The water colors up north often resemble the Caribbean Sea and the waves can be very intense, reaching over 20 feet (6 meters) high at times. (There are over 6000 shipwrecks in the Great Lakes, around 1500 on the bottom of Lake Michigan alone.)
I’m headed to a cabin further up north this summer to check out the moose, elk, the Aurora Borealis, and maybe hear some wolf calls (hopefully from a distance ;-) Music from summer water added to another apple music playlist, the Jazzzzzzzzzzzzzzz PLAYLIST!4/23/2021
Many thanks to the editors at Apple Music for adding SUMMER WATER music to another one of their Apple playlists, the Jazzzzzzzzzzzzzzz playlist! Lots of great music on this playlist as well which you can listen to here: https://apple.co/2RWYyTP
Great review of SUMMER WATER in Germany’s Image Hifi Magazine:
"Even the first track "Into River Fog" sounds like an invitation to DuBois' myriad of sounds, shimmering river and sea impressions. While listening, in the listener's imagination, image sequences of waves and currents merge into one another, the patterns forming on the surface of the water and the alternation of ebb and flow. Scott DuBois creates dreamlike events with a suggestive effect." Visit the AUS DEUTSCHLAND tab on the REVIEWS page to read more reviews from Germany! SUMMER WATER received a very nice review from Austria's Concerto Magazine:
"DuBois' strings sparkle like a dance to their own echo, triggered by the guitarist single-handedly. It's an atmospheric solo album in which every attack and every resonance counts. Pleasant harmonic pendulums in major create wide sound beds in which the following arpeggios are gently laid down until they and the bed become one and serve as a framework for the next melodic event."
