SUMMER WATER PRESS REVIEWS:

Named one of Journalist Dan Bilawsky's "Top 10 New Jazz Albums of the Year" for JazzTimes Magazine
- JazzTimes Magazine  (US)

Named one of the "50 Favorite Records of 2021"
- Missingduke  (ES)

"...Summer Water, his latest brilliant and sonically intricate piece of impressionistic musical storytelling...crackling and fiery symphonic energy via an expansive range of string tones, harmonies, rhythmic patterns and unbridled improvisations..."
- JAZZIZ Magazine  (US)

"Your mind cuts its own nature documentary to frame up alongside this soundtrack that’s already been created...This is a deep, tranquil, meditative album...masterful."
- Off The Tracks  (NZ)

"95/100 Rating: The guitarist masterfully condenses the flow...he works great with impressions and timbre...you can really see summer light on the billowing sea....constant change in dynamics, colors, mood...breathtaking..."
-  JazzPort  (CZ)

"Scott DuBois doesn't just play guitar; he's a sound sculptor...DuBois composed these 11 sinuous and feathery pieces not in summer, but during the dead of winter. Much like a river’s ebb and flow, they surge with forward momentum, swell with flying colors, and lull with introspection. His solitary approach—often quiet, occasionally abrasive, always atmospheric, sometimes symphonic—conjures up soundworlds that wouldn’t be out of place on the ECM label...Summer Water is a solo guitar clinic to behold."
- JazzTimes Magazine  (US)

"DuBois captures the dynamic textures and tonal colors of an orchestra, maintaining a bold, forceful sound, not just in terms of volume but intensity...a contemplative aura that permeates the entire session...frenetic fretwork navigating the crashing swells of a rising storm, before subsiding into tranquility in the aftermath...spiritual depth and compositional detail..."
- Point of Departure  (US)

"...a contemplative reflection of golden hour sunlight glistening...There is a particular sound that DuBois achieves throughout the recording, it is clear, precise and reserved, each note or chord rings richly...the power of the tides and flows are captured...'Sea Before the Storm' expertly encompasses a building tension...Summer Water is surprisingly onomatopoetic, and DuBois' light flooded sound is the perfect soundtrack for a meditative sojourn."
- Free Jazz Blog  (US)

"Best Jazz on Bandcamp: April 2021"
- Bandcamp  (US)

4.5 (out of 5) Stars
"...effulgent tides and emphatic strums shining down...a sense of mystery, heralding the downpour at the heart of the album...it acts as a key point of convergence for this brilliant bi-directional statement."

- All About Jazz  (US)

“The bellowing strings function as DuBois’ one-man orchestra, a symphonic effect demanded from his compositions in order for these pieces to be fully realized...SUMMER WATER is sagacious and spiritually deep...”
- Something Else!  (US)

"Even the first track "Into River Fog" sounds like an invitation to DuBois' myriad of sounds, shimmering river and sea impressions. While listening, in the listener's imagination, image sequences of waves and currents merge into one another, the patterns forming on the surface of the water and the alternation of ebb and flow. Scott DuBois creates dreamlike events with a suggestive effect."
- HiFi Magazine  (DE)

"DuBois' strings sparkle like a dance to their own echo, triggered by the guitarist single-handedly. It's an atmospheric solo album in which every attack and every resonance counts. Pleasant harmonic pendulums in major create wide sound beds in which the following arpeggios are gently laid down until they and the bed become one and serve as a framework for the next melodic event."
- Concerto Magazine  (AT)

"...the beauty and serene charm of an impressionist and expressionist landscape...of soft and tender echoes that caress your senses, subtly penetrating your inner self...Summer Water does not remain on the surface but delves into the depth of being, it is music for a new era...Scott DuBois uses his instrument to tell stories that emanate from the soul."
- Tomajazz  (ES)

"DuBois possesses a keen descriptive talent, which seems to be expressed even more richly in the texture of these sonic brushstrokes during solo performance."
- Missingduke  (ES)

"It creates atmospheres of an extraordinary beauty, a beauty not conventional but unique...there is something of Mahler in his sensitivity to nature and perhaps something of Ravel, or what Ravel owes to Debussy..."
- Jazz, Ese Rudio  (ES)

"4.5 (out of 5) Stars: dynamically and expressively rich…everything is subject to mood and imagery…Now the guitarist has spring reflections left. And I’m really looking forward to them now! And I’m happy to be surprised again…”
- Skjazz.SK  (SK)

"...quietly evocative music, with a Nordic taste...in suspense and enchanted...to underline DuBois' ability to construct sonorities with an amplitude that is sometimes almost orchestral with the guitar alone...definitely original."
- All About Jazz Italia  (IT)

"Chiming...shifts from mellow to melodically stormy..."
- Jazzwise  (UK)
